They carried them, pushed and pulled them, or simply encouraged them with a “go girl!” Dozens upon dozens of parents — many who battled infertility before conceiving their dreams — celebrated together at the Center for Reproductive Medicine’s 1st annual Joy of Parenthood 5K Run & Walk, held on a blue-skied Saturday morning at Lake Eola in downtown Orlando.

“We are honored to be involved with CRM’s campaign for infertility awareness,” said Christy Falkner of Altamonte Springs. “Dr. DeVane made our journey through infertility as comfortable as possible with his care and compassion. Most importantly, he made our dreams come true with our 10-month-old daughter, Kaylin Marie.”

The Falkners joined more than 360 others in celebrating the joy of parenthood and remembering those still struggling with infertility. A moment of silence was held at the start of the run-walk, and both the City of Orlando and the City of Winter Park accepted a proclamation from CRM declaring Mother’s Day weekend as Infertility Awareness Weekend.

“I think the walk is a great opportunity to share the ‘Joy of Parenthood’ with other parents and would-be’s — kind of a way to show them how rewarding it will be regardless of all the problems they might be facing in the meantime,” said Sandi Ebben of Orlando, who did not battle infertility.

The Joy of Parenthood 5K also celebrated the winners of mother-daughter and father-son look-alike contests and a stroller-decorating competition, as well as the family with the most 5K entrants, and the youngest participants. All proceeds go to Resolve, the infertility support group for those battling infertility. Next year’s 5K will be May 12 — save the date!
