Egg freezing, or oocyte cryopreservation, is a process in which a woman’s eggs (oocytes) are extracted, frozen, and stored as a method to preserve reproductive potential in women of reproductive age. It is a procedure that has been around since 1986, but has been growing in popularity over the past five years. This is largely due to advanced technology which led the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) to lift its “experimental” label for egg freezing in October 2012. Since then, it’s been a growing trend especially for healthy, young women who are electively delaying childbearing for a variety of reasons.
