Celebrating Pride, Celebrating Progress: How Fertility Care Has Evolved for LGBTQ+ Families

Posted on June 3, 2025 by Inception Fertility

In a fairly short amount of time, fertility care has come a long way, especially for LGBTQ+ individuals and couples. As fertility treatments become more advanced, it's essential to partner with a fertility clinic that understands these techniques and has extensive experience working with LGBTQ+ patients.

LGBTQ+ Fertility Care: Then and Now

In 1979, a couple in California became the first openly gay couple to jointly adopt a child in the U.S.. By the 1980s, sperm banks began operation, serving lesbian couples and aspiring single parents. The first gestational carrier (surrogate) successfully delivered a healthy baby in 1985. In 2016, the World Health Organization (WHO) updated its definition of infertility to include same-sex couples and single parents by choice.

Today, LGBTQ+ couples and individuals have various options for expanding their families. Two common methods are intrauterine insemination (IUI) and in vitro fertilization (IVF). For same-sex female couples, reciprocal IVF allows one partner to provide their eggs while the other carries and delivers the pregnancy. Meanwhile, same-sex male couples can use an egg donor and surrogate to become parents.

How Fertility Clinics Embrace Inclusivity

It's the job of a fertility clinic to assist anyone who wants to have a child, including same-sex and transgender patients. If you're looking for inclusive care, it's essential to find a clinic that has experience supporting LGBTQ+ families and offers the compassion and guidance needed to guide them on their unique path to parenthood.

At the Center for Reproductive Medicine, we prioritize supporting and treating LGBTQ+ families with respect and care. We offer a comprehensive range of fertility treatments specifically designed for LGBTQ+ patients, including IUI, IVF, reciprocal IVF, donor eggs and sperm, gestational surrogacy, and fertility preservation for transgender individuals. We continuously advocate for the LGBTQ+ community and invest in the latest fertility technology to help them build their dream families.
