Using Donor Sperm to Start Your Family: A Guide for LGBTQ+ Patients in Orlando

Posted on June 25, 2026 by Inception Fertility

For many LGBTQ+ individuals and couples, donor sperm is an essential part of the family building journey. Whether you are a same-sex female couple, or a single woman, finding and using donor sperm is likely to be one of the first major decisions in your family-building journey.

At the Center for Reproductive Medicine in Orlando, we walk LGBTQ+ patients through this process every day. Here is what you need to know — from choosing a donor to your first treatment cycle.

Where Does Donor Sperm Come From?

Donor sperm is obtained from licensed sperm banks that recruit, screen, and process donations from anonymous or known donors. Reputable sperm banks conduct extensive screening that includes:

  • Comprehensive medical and genetic history

  • Testing for infectious diseases and sexually transmitted infections

  • Semen analysis to assess sperm count, motility, and morphology

  • Psychological screening and evaluation

  • FDA-required quarantine and re-testing periods before sperm is released for use

This rigorous process is designed to protect recipients and their future children, and reputable banks maintain detailed records so that donor-conceived individuals can access certain health information in the future if needed.

How Do I Choose a Donor?

Choosing a donor is one of the most personal decisions in this process, and there is no one way to approach it. Sperm banks provide detailed donor profiles that typically include:

  • Physical characteristics such as height, weight, hair color, eye color, and ethnicity

  • Educational background and occupation

  • Personal essays and staff impressions

  • Family medical and genetic history

  • Childhood photos (available at some banks for an additional fee)

  • Audio interviews in some cases

Some patients prioritize finding a donor who shares physical traits with one or both partners. Others focus on health history, personality descriptions, or even a gut feeling from reading the profile. Our team can help you think through what matters most to you and point you toward reputable banks that serve our area.

CRM works with several established sperm banks and can provide guidance on vetting options and placing an order, including coordinating delivery of the specimen to our lab for your treatment cycle.

IUI vs. IVF with Donor Sperm: Which Is Right for You?

Once you have selected a donor, the next question is which treatment approach is right for your family. The two most common options are:

IUI is a relatively simple and affordable procedure in which donor sperm is placed directly into the uterus during ovulation. It can be performed as part of a natural cycle or combined with mild ovarian stimulation to improve the chances of ovulation. IUI is often recommended as a first-line option for patients without significant fertility challenges.

IVF involves stimulating the ovaries to produce multiple eggs, retrieving those eggs, fertilizing them with donor sperm in the lab, and transferring a resulting embryo into the uterus. IVF typically offers higher success rates than IUI per cycle and is recommended when there are known fertility factors, when IUI has not been successful, or when the patient wants to add genetic testing of embryos.

For same-sex female couples interested in reciprocal IVF — where one partner provides the eggs and the other carries the pregnancy — IVF with donor sperm is the necessary foundation.

What Does the Process Look Like at CRM?

At CRM, the process typically begins with a consultation and fertility evaluation, during which your physician will review your health history and recommend the most appropriate treatment pathway. From there, our team coordinates your cycle monitoring, the timing of your donor sperm shipment, and the procedure itself — all with clear communication every step of the way.

CRM has been helping patients achieve pregnancy through donor insemination since the clinic's founding in 1985. With over 6,000 babies born and five Castle Connolly Top Doctors on staff, our team brings a level of experience and care that is hard to match in the Central Florida region.

A Note on Known Donors

Some patients prefer to use a known donor — a friend or family member who agrees to provide sperm. This is absolutely possible, but it does require a different process: known donors must undergo the same FDA-mandated screening as anonymous donors, and there are legal considerations to navigate as well. CRM can walk you through the requirements and help you determine whether a known donor arrangement is a good fit for your situation.
